April 2011 ~Welcome to At Ease Horse Care! Although many of the links below are broken and some photos not loading (I will get to fixing this part as much as I can!) ~ I wanted to show viewers of Voice For The Horsethe beginning days when this project all started. It was in 2007 and when Angel came into our lives, this one web page was not enough to share "our story" so I developed another web site called Voice For The Horse as you know it today. Our experience of learning more about this hard side of the equestrian industry took many years to comprehend and further understand. Voice For The Horse is a result of this. Thank you for sharing your time with us and when you are ready to return to the OFFICIAL Voice For The Horse web site just click on the link below ~ thank you!

Spring 2007~ I wrote on my Women’s Health & Site Dedication Pagethatour lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. Through all the research I had done regarding women and heart disease, the impact I experienced when I learned of the PMU mare and her foals life (and death) experience was more than enough to deter me from my task at hand. I knew I could not look away from what I had seen and learned about. What caused even more concern for me was learning about the horse slaughter industry that is thriving right here in Canada and below the US border in Mexico. Banning of horse slaughter in the United States has not in any way stopped the slaughter of horses in North America and now poses an even larger problem. Horses destined to slaughter now have to endure the transport to either Canada or Mexico which can be a crippling and debilitating experience...if they arrive alive.

It is only my intention to bring to the forefront the inhumane practice of the horse slaughter industry in Canada for food consumption on this web page. What I have found in conversation with others (both horse and non-horse people alike) is that they had no idea this was taking place and they had no idea that there was even a market for slaughtered horses. Through all conversations I have had with people I found one common thread and that is that they cared and were astonished that such activity was taking place in our own back yards.
I have chosen to link this page to several web pages and articles which will help those that are interested to learn more. Warning: the content on these web pages contains both graphic written text and live video footage.
If this issue is one that you wish to move forward with and help put an end to please visit The Canadian Horse Defence Coalition website. Through the pages of this site you will find links directing you to Members of Parliament which you can contact to discuss a bill to end the slaughter of our horses.
I welcome you to read on and look forward to your supporting the end to the mass slaughter of horses in our country.

News Update!! March 11, 2008 A herd of 100 horses has been seized by the SPCA from a Northern Alberta farm and are in dire need of help. The horse community in the area has pulled together for a massive rescue operation. Any donation at this time is not too small. This operation has a substantial start up cost just to get the horses to the ranch where care will be provided to bring them back to health. Please consider to give at this time and be part of a movement that will make the difference in the lives of many more horses in that they may not have to go down this road with the awareness that has now been created. Thank You!! Go to the Rescue 100 web site to make your contribution.
Horse Lover Rescues 4 From Slaughter SEGUIN TWP. - Luanne Jaklitsch admits that she used to try to look at the horse meat buyers the same way she would would with cattle or pig buyers, however, since attending the auction in St. Jacob’s on November 17, to buy as many horses as possible from the premarin drug industry, her positive outlook has been slightly tarnished. March 11, 2008 - Our New Budweiser Horse "Angel" (on the left) and Her Friend Enjoy the Snow!! (Angel is actually a cross between a Clydesdale/TB and Paint Horse as most PMU foals are cross breds). Angelhas the Eyes of a Paint, Legs of a TB and the Presence of a Clydesdale...She is Beautiful!
Angel was pulled off a feedlot in Manitoba last fall by a kind soul and sent out to a friend of mine in Vancouver this past January. When I first met her(which was totally unplanned by the way) I just happened to have a few extra bucks in my pocket and I said I would take her. It just felt like the right thing to do.Angel is just nine months old and is still abit wild. Angel loved the Lavender Essential Oil I introduced her to and when it was time to leave, she was yawning and going to sleep, just the way I like it!

Washington, DC (January 9, 2008) – Veterinarians for Equine Welfare (VEW) has just issued a new white paper entitled “Horse Slaughter – Its Ethical Impact and Subsequent Response of the Veterinary Profession.” The white paper was created to address misinformation being circulated by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and other organizations opposing a potential ban on horse slaughter in the US and exportation of horses for slaughter.
In December of 2007 several VEW veterinarians met with legislators in Washington, DC to discuss the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/S. 311), a bill that will prohibit the slaughter of horses in the US or their export for the same purpose. They were shocked by the amount of misinformation purposely being spread by the AVMA and groups including the horse slaughterhouses themselves who are all part of a coalition called the Horse Welfare Coalition.
To address this, VEW has released a white paper clearly addressing the inaccuracies. The paper contains detailed supporting information, something largely absent from materials produced by the pro-horse slaughter advocates.
“I submitted a letter to the editor of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in response to the AVMA’s latest ‘fact sheet’ on horse slaughter but it was rejected,” stated Dr. Nick Dodman a co-founder of VEW. “It is a shame to see a professional organization work so hard to undermine something such as the horse slaughter ban based on speculation and unsubstantiated information.” Dr. Nick Dodman went on to say, “as veterinarians we are bound a code of ethics to prevent animal suffering, not hinder animal protection measures in order to promote economic interests.”
A recent release from the AVMA points to the dramatic increase of horses being sent to slaughter in Mexico from the US. While the increase is disconcerting, advocates of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act have always indicated this would happen without passage of the federal ban. It has been because of opposition to the bill by the AVMA and other pro-horse slaughter groups that the federal ban has thus far failed to pass. Had they worked with those advocating the humane treatment of horses, horse slaughter and the export of horses to Mexico would have been halted years ago and enormous animal suffering would have been relieved.
“It is time to stop the rhetoric and political backhanded tricks that have been blocking passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (H.R. 503/ S. 311),” said Dr. Theo Antikas, another co-founder of VEW. “We must all work together for positive change that will help end the suffering of tens of thousands of American horses.”

Investigators Reveal a Living Hell for Horses Transported to Slaughter in Mexico
Texas Department of Agriculture Facility among those at fault
By Animals’ Angels USA Investigations 8/31/07 – 9/8/07
Investigators for Animals’ Angels USA looked into several Mexican border slaughter-horse export facilities this past month. The Texas Department of Agriculture Socorro export facility in El Paso, TX, which is owned by the State of Texas, and the Santa Teresa Export facility in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, which is privately owned by the Chihuahua Cattlemen’s Association, were targeted for investigation. In 2007 a total of 27,237 American horses have been transported to Mexico to date (as of 9/13/07). During the first week of September, 1,030 horses were exported from Texas and New Mexico to Mexico for slaughter. Animals’ Angels Investigation Reveals: Conditions at both facilities remain appalling for the horses and reveals an urgent need for Congress to pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. Menopause, Horses and the Industry of Death
In generations past, horses were abandoned or shipped off to slaughter once it was decided that they had worn out their usefulness in pulling wagons or plows and in carrying loads or people: think of poor Boxer, carried away by a van marked “Alfred Simmonds, Horse Slaughterer and Glue Boiler” toward the end of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Today, some horses are sentenced to die because they are of no more use to pharmaceutical companies that make fortunes dispensing medicines to consumers, most notably the drug Premarin. Read More…
